New Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work Qualifications

The FAA Award in Emergency First Aid at Work and the FAA Award in First Aid at Work qualifications have been reviewed by the First Aid Awarding Organisation Forum and new versions are being launched on 1st October 2017.

The amendments to the qualifications are minimal but the biggest change is that the FAA Emergency First Aid at Work qualification will be a Level 3 qualification:

Emergency First Aid at Work

·        Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation must include the safe use of an AED and this must be assessed as part of CPR. Safe use of an AED is demonstrated by ‘correct placement of pads’ and ‘following AED instructions’

·        Seizures – learners must be suspicious of cardiac arrest in any casualty displaying signs of a seizure

First Aid at Work

In addition to the changes to the Emergency First Aid at Work qualification (unit 1 of the First Aid at Work qualification), the following changes have been made in unit 2:

·        Learners must demonstrate both a support and an elevated sling

·        Chest injuries to be taught are penetrating chest wounds and rib cage injuries

·        Learners do not need to be able to differentiate between fractures and dislocations

·        Learners do not need to differentiate between the different types of head injuries such as concussion, cerebral compression and skull fracture

·        Diabetes should focus on hypoglycaemia, low level of sugar in the bloodstream

Qualification Specifications for the new qualifications can be viewed here and include detailed qualification information as well as the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the qualification:

New Style Assessment & Course Paperwork

FAA have introduced a new assessment for these qualifications.  The Emergency First Aid at Work qualification is assessed by practical demonstration and oral questioning only and the First Aid at Work qualification is assessed by practical demonstration, oral questioning and written assessment.

The new course paperwork has been designed to make the administration of the qualification simpler whilst still adhering to the Regulatory Bodies requirements in respect of evidence required.

FAA Approved Centres should refer to recent FAA Newsletters for full guidance and resources.
